Berlin
A state in itself with a population of 3.4 million; a multicultural metropolis
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Germany's capital has once again become a lively and exciting city, with its politicians, paparazzi, stars and celebrities, its rich cultural life and hip nightlife, as well as the Love Parade and demonstrations that pass from Alexanderplatz to the Victory Column. Friedrich the Great said that Berlin has something for everyone and he was so fond of the city that he built a magnificent palace for himself, the Sanssouci, in nearby Potsdam (where the German-Polish Youth Project is also based). It was here, in the 'palace without cares' ("sans souci") that he planned to expand the might of Prussia, setting his eyes on Polish Silesia. However, past history doesn't worry the many Poles who have been moving to Berlin for generations and now make up the second largest minority in the city.
